From Self-Doubt to $10K: What Winning the Equal Slice Pitch Means–My Journey to Winning Startup Canada’s $10K Equal Slice Pitch Competition Part 5

The Announcement

All ten finalists had finished our live pitches. The judges took what felt like forever to deliberate. My heart pounded as we all waited, every finalist on the edge of their seat.

And then, they began to announce the five national winners. When my name was called, it was like time froze. Shock. Disbelief. Relief. And then, pure pride.

I had done it.

Sharing the Moment

The room erupted in applause. I heard voices around me say, “I knew you would win!”

Really? Because I didn’t think so. That moment of validation quieted the inner critic that had been whispering “You don’t belong here” since the day I saw the application.

It was a rush to celebrate with my peers—and to share the moment with Ciara, my Google mentor, who was able to be by my side along the journey.

Photos were taken. Tears were shed. And for once, I let myself soak it all in.

More Than the Money

Winning Pizza Hut Canada’s $10,000 Equal Slice Pitch wasn’t just about the cheque.

It was about validation—proof that a business rooted in empowerment, confidence, and community deserves a seat at the table.

It was about accepting I am a formidable business leader.

With this grant, I’ll finally be able to begin renovating my double garage into a proper workshop space.

A place where women can learn hands-on DIY skills without judgment, where confidence can grow one project at a time, and where empowerment becomes tangible.

Looking Ahead

My goal is clear: to empower women through in-person workshops, coaching, and community.

This funding is the fuel to help make that possible.

I am profoundly grateful to Startup Canada, Pizza Hut Canada, Google Canada, WE-CAN, and every single person who believed in me and in Canadian Handywoman’s mission.
